"A book is a gift you can open again and again." Garrison Keillor
I have always considered books as close companions. Like Charlie Lovett stated, "A good book is like a good friend. It will stay with you for the rest of your life. When you first get to know it, it will give you excitement and adventure, and years later it will provide you with comfort and familiarity."
Sorting through books at my parent's house, I was reconnected with some "dear friends." Such fond memories flooded back simply by glimpsing the picture on the cover. I hope my kids will enjoy books as much as I do. We already have a wonderful collection of kid books and I can't wait to add more short novels and chapter books.
Book Recommendations (more to come)
Some of our favorites in no particular order include...
How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World
This was a fun way to learn about where ingredients for a pie come from, taking you from country to country where each ingredient is grown.
A Little House Picture Book Treasury
This was a great introduction to this series since the stories were shortened and the illustrations are beautiful.
A Thank you Letter to My Homeschool
This year we read this book at the beginning of school. It was a sweet story that beautifully depicts the blessing of homeschooling.
I'm Glad for Where I Am
I love this rhyming book that is a part of a little series that sweetly addresses topics concerning gratefulness for where we live and what we have, as well as sharing with others.
James Herriot's Treasury for Children
I grew up listening to these stories. They tell the sweet tales of adorable farm animals that veterinarian James Herriot cares for. The illustrations are precious and beautifully done.
Nothing But the Blood of Jesus
This is a part of the Hymns for Little Ones collection. It beautifully illustrates pictures that correlate with popular hymns.
Daddy's Girl
This is such a sweet simple book about a dad and a daughter having a tea party together.
Winnie - The True Story of the Bear Who Inspired Winnie-The Pooh
This is such a fascinating book that describes the background story of Winnie the Pooh.
Nature Study Book List
For the past two years we have loved using all four seasons from Treehouse Schoolhouse's Nature Study. One of my favorite parts is the book list! Each season includes three pages of fiction and nonfiction books based on the topic for each week, with a total of 13 weeks. I would simply log into the library website, search for books up to 4 weeks in advance (if I was on top of it), and place them on hold. Most books were available within the week, others I was placed on a "waiting list," while still other books were being transported from other libraries in our county. It was such a great quick way to secure books for the week.
